Seasonality at Smith Canteen

If you ever stroll through the Carroll Street Greenmarket on a Sunday, you know that summer is the apex of the growing season. Stands overflow with plump tomatoes, deep purple eggplants, wiry fennel bulbs, and golden sweet corn. Smith Canteen is dedicated to using up as much of this incredible local produce as possible, especially since these veggies are only available for a few sweet, but all too short months of the year. Our menu these days is pretty heavy on these seasonal goodies. Pictured is our new bakery item: a sweet tart with blueberries and red currants. Other notable seasonal items are watermelon and sweet corn gazpacho, and a B.L.T. with Burger’s bacon, lolla rossa and heirloom tomatoes with basil pesto on Balthazar sourdough. For the record: the corn is from Satur Farms from Long Island, the tomatoes are from Lani’s Farm in New Jersey, the basil is from BK Farmyard’s Youth Farm here in Brooklyn, and the berries are from a variety of farms with stands at the Union Square and Grand Army Plaza Greenmarkets.
